Zcash proposes Ironwood upgrade after discovery of Orchard vulnerability

Zcash faces a major challenge: users are currently unable to independently verify whether the circulating supply of ZEC has been affected by a potentially exploited vulnerability in the Orchard protocol. To address this, Shielded Labs, together with other parties in the Zcash ecosystem, is proposing the so-called Ironwood network upgrade. It aims to restore confidence in the integrity of the ZEC supply, regardless of whether the vulnerability was ever actually exploited.

What exactly is going on?

Earlier this week, news emerged that there is a critical bug in the Orchard shielded pool system of Zcash, a vulnerability that theoretically allows the creation of fake ZEC. Zooko Wilcox, co-founder of Zcash, acknowledges that the team considers exploitation of this vulnerability unlikely, but it cannot be entirely ruled out. Moreover, it is impossible for ordinary users to verify this themselves, which undermines trust in the network.

That lack of transparency is precisely the problem that the Ironwood upgrade aims to address. As the price of Zcash already fell sharply after the news of the bug, this shows how sensitive the market is to this kind of uncertainty. Meanwhile, investor Dragonfly is holding onto its ZEC position, while others, such as Arthur Hayes, previously dumped their entire position.

How does the Ironwood upgrade work?

The Ironwood proposal addresses the problem in two ways. First, a completely new shielded pool is created. Second, the existing Orchard pool is locked: it can no longer create new outputs. In this way, the circulating supply of Zcash becomes verifiable again through the network’s consensus rules, something that is simply not possible now.

A concrete timeline for the rollout is not yet available. However, the team is clear about the intention: it is not about whether the vulnerability was ever exploited, but about ensuring that everyone can verify this themselves in the future. According to Zooko Wilcox, Ironwood is the best way forward, and the discussion with the Zcash community is now being initiated.
