August strongest crypto month of 2026 with 83% winners
August was the strongest month of 2026 for the breadth of the crypto market. Of the hundred largest cryptocurrencies excluding stablecoins, 70 of the 84 coins measured closed the month in positive territory, or 83%. That is the highest percentage of winners so far this year, according to data from CryptoRank. The average monthly gain across the top 100 stood at 22.5%, while the median gain came in at 15.1%.
In brief:
- In August, 83% of the top 100 cryptos (excluding stablecoins) posted a positive return, the highest share of winners in 2026.
- The average monthly gain was 22.5%, the median gain 15.1%.
- BTW was the biggest gainer, up 298%, followed by PUMP (+112%) and Zcash (+83%).
From 13% winners in June to 83% in August
The surge in August is all the more striking compared with the previous months. In June, only 13% of the top 100 were in positive territory; in July, that recovered to 55%. August continued that trend strongly, jumping to 83% winners.
Only fourteen of the 84 coins measured closed the month in the red. The worst performers were coins that lost up to 24%.
BTW sprinted to nearly 300% gains
The absolute outliers at the top were BTW, up 298%, PUMP with 112%, and Zcash with 83%. On the losing side, 币安人生 recorded the biggest loss, down 24%, followed by STABLE with minus 22% and ONDO with minus 12%.
Market breadth, the share of coins trading in positive territory, is regarded by analysts as a gauge of the strength of a rally. A broad rally in which many coins gain simultaneously is generally considered healthier than a move driven by only a handful of big names.
With September now underway, investors are, among other things, keeping an eye on major token unlocks scheduled for this month, which could influence market dynamics.
