Bitcoin and altcoins flow massively to exchanges
The crypto market is showing signs of unease. According to research platform CryptoQuant, Bitcoin inflows to exchanges reached an extreme level of nearly 49,000 BTC on 30 June, a level seen only a few times this year. This pattern typically equates to higher volatility and a risk-averse attitude among investors.
Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.
Large holders dump en masse
The recent inflows were mainly driven by large holders. Notably, the average deposit size has risen from about 1 BTC to 2 BTC per transaction. This indicates that whales and institutional players are actively reducing their positions or moving their Bitcoin to exchanges for potential sale.
This behaviour contrasts with previous months, when large purchases attracted companies like MetaPlanet. Now the momentum appears to have shifted.
Ethereum and altcoins follow the same pattern
Bitcoin’s story is repeating with Ethereum. Exchange inflows for ETH rose to more than 1.25 million tokens, a level not reached earlier this year. At the same time, altcoin deposits hit their highest point in nearly two months.
CryptoQuant views this simultaneous inflow of Bitcoin, Ethereum and altcoins as a warning sign. The data suggests that investors are pulling back from multiple asset classes at the same time, pointing to broader risk aversion in the market.
What lies ahead
Historically, such behaviour by large holders precedes periods of heightened volatility. Investors moving their Bitcoin to exchanges typically do so with the intention of selling or adjusting position sizes. With Bitcoin currently around $62K and up 1.3% in 24 hours, the short term remains uncertain.
CryptoQuant’s warning comes at a time when the market is already volatile. Who will buy what these holders are selling, and at what price? These questions will determine in the coming weeks whether this is the start of a correction or merely a temporary shock.
