Bitcoin futures sentiment deteriorates after positive phase
The sentiment on the Bitcoin futures market is deteriorating rapidly. After a positive phase, during which the Taker Buy/Sell Ratio reached 1.21 on 19 August, selling pressure is increasing and the 30-day average of the Net Taker Volume is falling sharply. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $76.600, down 1.6% over the past 24 hours.
Bitcoin is available on OKX and Bybit.
In short:
- The Net Taker Volume fell from $213.7 billion to $97.8 billion within a few days.
- The Taker Buy/Sell Ratio has been negative since 30 August, pointing to growing short positions.
- The pattern resembles the cooling-off seen in May 2026 after a similar rally.
From optimism to growing short positions
When Bitcoin broke through the $65.000 mark in early August, market optimism rose considerably. On 19 August, the Taker Buy/Sell Ratio peaked at 1.21, a level indicating clearly more buying pressure than selling pressure in the futures market. That positive mood now appears to be fading quickly.
Analyst Darkfost points to the sharp decline in the Net Taker Volume, from $213.7 billion to $97.8 billion in just a few days. In addition, the Taker Buy/Sell Ratio has been in negative territory since 30 August, meaning that on balance investors are taking more short positions than long positions.
What does the Net Taker Volume say?
The Net Taker Volume compares the volume of buy and sell orders on the futures market. The metric provides insight into how investors are positioning themselves. Futures remain the market segment with the largest trading volumes, larger than both the spot market and ETFs, and therefore have a clear influence on the broader market.
Darkfost sees a pattern similar to what played out in May 2026, a period in which sentiment also turned after a rally. August was also retrospectively regarded as the strongest crypto month of 2026, which makes the current cooling-off all the more striking.
Whether the recent inflow into Bitcoin ETFs at the end of August provides sufficient counterweight remains to be seen. According to the analyst, the situation is beginning to deteriorate in the short term.
